In the context of our career blog “professional women power”, female colleagues introduce themselves,
talk about their career paths and day to day work at Rödl & Partner.
In this way, we would like to raise awareness of women as well as motivate female applicants and colleagues
to bravely pursue their individual career paths at Rödl & Partner.

I am sure that we will continue to grow together as a team and master future challenges.“

Derya Bandak has headed the Rödl & Partner Dubai Branch office in the UAE since 2014 and the Riyadh office since last year. She has two boys (21, 5), works full-timeand leads a team of 14 in the UAE and Saudi Arabia.

A brief look back: You have been with Rödl & Partner for over 10 years now. What was the first year like for you?

I was always looking for new challenges in my job. From the very beginning, I was involved in international projects at Rödl & Partner and was totally excited. It was and still is extremely exciting and thrilling for me. The entire foreign team at the time gave me a great reception and supported me in every way. I learned a lot and was able to expand my skills and deepen my knowledge already in the first year.

Shortly after starting my new job in December 2012, I got the chance to visit Dubai. This trip awakened an enthusiasm in me for the region that continues to this day. The city fascinates me with its modern architecture and vibrant life. When I was faced with the decision at the end of 2013 whether to stay in my hometown or move to Dubai, the choice was not difficult for me. I decided to pull up stakes in Germany and move to fascinating Dubai. Since then, I have been living happily in the vibrant city on the Persian Gulf and enjoy the international flair and excitement that this region offers me every day.

What do you enjoy most about your work as a partner and branch manager for the UAE and Saudi office? What, on the other hand, are the challenges and how do you deal with them?

I really enjoy working in a team and have built up a strong bond with my colleagues over the last few years. We have grown strongly as a team and always meet as equals. The support and cooperation among each other is great. I find it especially great that I am accepted and recognised as a woman within the team and also in society. That gives me a good feeling and I feel very comfortable in my work.

Of course, there are also challenges, especially in the highly competitive market of the German legal sector. In order to stay competitive, we always have to be up to date and recognise new business opportunities in time and implement them successfully. Commuting between different jurisdictions can also be a challenge. But I think it is important to take short breathers and then continue with renewed energy to succeed. I am sure that we will continue to grow together as a team and master future challenges.

Those are nice prospects! And how do you manage to maintain a balance between work and private life?

That is actually very important to me. That's why I always try to keep an eye on my work-life balance. At the weekend, time with my family is particularly valuable to me. I reserve the weekends largely for my loved ones and try to spend a lot of time with my little son in particular. That makes me feel good and is the best way for me to switch off and recharge my batteries. In addition, I practice yoga regularly to keep my body and mind fit and to clear my head. This helps me a lot to always stay focused and motivated, even in my professional life.

Of course, it can sometimes be difficult to reconcile all this. But I think it's simply important to free up time and set priorities. That's the only way you can be there for your family and successfully manage your professional life.

Thank you so much Derya! We are very impressed by your courageous decision to pull up stakes in Germany and move to Dubai.
