As an international company, we are committed to tolerance, intercultural understanding and getting to know each other across national borders. That is why the city partnership between Kharkiv in Ukraine and Nuremberg is particularly close to our hearts. Our company founder Dr. Bernd Rödl was the chairman of the “Partnerschaftsverein Charkiw-Nürnberg” (Kharkiv-Nuremberg Partnership Association) from 1995 until his passing and a driving force behind the association’s mission to help people help themselves – with private initiative, personal encounters and trustworthy partners. Thanks to his efforts and support, the cultural and educational centre “Nürnberger Haus” (“Nuremberg House”) was founded in Kharkiv, which has been significantly shaping international and intercultural understanding in Kharkiv for over 25 years with language courses, exchanges, cultural projects and further training. As a language learning centre, the Nuremberg House is accredited by the Goethe-Institut and oversees the teaching materials centre for German teachers in the region. Its German language courses are considered the best in Kharkiv. Every year, the Nuremberg House holds exhibitions, seminars, readings and concerts, which are sponsored by the German Foreign Office through the Goethe-Institut. In addition, it has become a contact point for all Ukrainians interested in Germany and for Germans visiting Kharkiv.

Another important task is the reliable implementation of the social projects of the Partnership Association, such as food aid for the poor, the child development centre, the local children’s recreation as well as the care of poor, terminally ill people through an outpatient social station. All these social projects were successfully continued in 2021. This makes a sustainable and effective contribution to the further development of a constructive partnership between East and West.

In 2021, the Nuremberg House continued to flourish thanks to its dedicated team of educators and the excellent leadership of Svitlana Chystyakova. 26 German courses were held at all levels, some face-to-face and some online. The Goethe-Institut re-accredited the institution in June. Despite the pandemic, cultural projects were organised, such as digital readings with German speakers, a film week and the exhibition „Dürer Paraphrasen“ (“Dürer Paraphrases”). A film about the pandemic was also shot and broadcast in Nuremberg and Kharkiv with the “Medienwerkstatt Franken” and the Kharkiv media group Nakipelo. The German Club with speakers from Nuremberg offers inspiration and language training on various topics.

Especially with the great challenges of 2020 and 2021, the reliable support of Rödl & Partner was a great help. It was not only possible to finance spatial improvements for the Nuremberg House, such as modern windows, ventilation and functional furniture, but also new computers with faster internet and functional printers. Furthermore, the website could be renewed and the further training of the teachers could be promoted, especially for online teaching. Finally, it was possible to hire another teacher and a caretaker.
