Career with prospects: apprenticeship, business administrator, MBA programme

Lena Schulz has been with Rödl & Partner in Nuremberg since 2016. Her journey in the firm began as a trainee and then led to the position of team assistant. Today, she works as a business manager in the healthcare and social economy sector. At the same time, she is completing an MBA programme. She explains below how Rödl & Partner supports continuous professional development:

How did your professional career start more than eight years ago and how did you get to where you are now?

My professional journey began more than eight years ago when I started as a trainee at Rödl & Partner on 1 September 2016. During my apprenticeship as an office management assistant, I had the opportunity to get to know many different areas of the firm, which sparked my curiosity and enthusiasm for the business world.

My time as an apprentice flew by and I was not only able to gain professional knowledge but also make valuable personal contacts. Once I had successfully completed my apprenticeship, I was offered the opportunity to join the PMC Healthcare/NPO team as a team assistant. I was very pleased about this, as both the interpersonal interaction and the professional perspective were right. After completing my apprenticeship, I decided to complete further training to become a certified business administrator. This took 2 years. After successfully completing it, I switched to a dual role as an audit assistant and team assistant. This gave me the opportunity to expand my professional skills. I also wanted to expand my knowledge after completing my further training to become a certified business administrator. So I decided to start a distance learning Master of Business Administration programme.

Rödl & Partner provides me with excellent support by offering a wide range of further training opportunities and creating customised ways to reconcile work and personal needs.

Lena Schulz Business Managerin NPO

You started out as an apprentice and now work as a business manager. Why did you choose this path and this industry?

I have always had the ambition to develop professionally and take on more responsibility. Personal development is very important to me. After training as a business administrator, I wanted to put my theoretical knowledge into practice in order to deepen my professional skills. I was given the opportunity to work as a dual team assistant and audit assistant. This is easy to put into practice and I have the full backing and support of my team. I chose the field of auditing because I have always found it exciting and it offers a variety of challenges.

As I decided to start an MBA in November 2022, I reduced my working hours to 36 hours per week. I therefore made a conscious decision not to switch completely to the specialist area for the time being. It was the right decision, as it allowed me to achieve a good balance between work and study.

However, after a long time in auditing, I realised that I didn’t see myself in this area in the long term. Although the audit work was exciting and challenging, I realised that my passion and strengths lay more in organisational and strategic work. As the end of my MBA degree was approaching and our department had grown considerably with the new location in Dortmund, we came to the new role of Business Manager. I have now been working as a Business Manager in the Healthcare NPO division since September 2024 and have left the assistance area completely. In my new role, I am the manager of 13 employees in the back office, which I really enjoy. The opportunity to lead a team and make strategic decisions is very fulfilling and confirms that this is the right path for me.

What are your career plans for the future? What goals have you set yourself that you would like to achieve and how does Rödl & Partner support you as an employer on the way there?

My professional plans for the future are aimed at continuously expanding my professional skills and specialising in strategic tasks in the long term and establishing myself even more in the role of business manager. Rödl & Partner – especially my manager Norman Lenger-Bauchowitz – is providing me with excellent support by offering a wide range of further training opportunities and creating customised ways to reconcile my professional and personal needs. I am very grateful for this opportunity and appreciate the full support of my team.

Thank you very much for the interview and good luck for the future!
