Career change into payroll accounting

Last September was the launch of Fit4Payroll - our internal training program in payroll accounting. With Fit4Payroll, we have developed a unique and structured training concept that prepares participants for their work in payroll accounting through practical learning content in addition to teaching them the theoretical basics. The target group was career changers with no previous training in payroll accounting. A total of eight participants were selected from a large number of applications and are looking forward to their new challenge.

Over a period of almost four months, the participants learned about basic knowledge and special cases in payroll accounting. The concept includes various learning formats such as classroom training, learning videos, self-study and space for exchange and joint learning as well as regular individual assessments. In addition, practical days in payroll accounting and practising case studies with colleagues from the payroll accounting team to get to know the day-to-day work. Following the training, the participants joined the payroll accounting team directly in January. A field report:

You joined us as a career changer and previously worked in another profession. Why did you choose the Fit4Payroll training program at Rödl & Partner?

Michael: After eight years of self-employment in the securities sector, I wanted a permanent job again and regularly browsed the job vacancies to find something interesting. By chance, I came across the Rödl & Partner job vacancy and thought that this was a very interesting field of work with a top employer. After a really short period of consideration, I decided to apply and was very happy when I was accepted.
Daniela: I saw a career change with Fit4Payroll as a unique opportunity to efficiently enter the professional field of payroll accounting and to combine this with my personal goals. For family reasons, I worked independently as a hairdresser for almost 20 years. As I got older, I started thinking more and more about finding employment that was subject to social security. Security, retirement provision and challenge were my reasons for deciding to go down this path with Rödl & Partner.

Was your previous knowledge enough to get you off to a good start in the apprenticeship?

Michael: Since I worked as a bank clerk for around 12 years and have various further training courses in finance, among other things, my previous knowledge made it much easier to get started. However, even without the “financial knowledge”, the start would have gone well, as the concept was designed for career changers.
Daniela: Thanks to my previous school education in economics, I found it easier to get to grips with certain topics. But even without prior knowledge, a good start can be achieved with motivation, patience and perseverance.

The probationary period is over and you have decided to stay with us. That makes us happy! Are you well integrated into the payroll team?

Michael: Yes, I’ve settled into the team very well. There are always colleagues who are willing to help and patiently answer questions.
Daniela: My decision to join Rödl & Partner was the right one and I feel very comfortable in the team. Work is becoming more and more enjoyable because I feel more secure everyday. I have challenges every day, which makes the profession even more interesting for me.

What do you particularly like about your new job?

Michael: It may sound strange when I say that the job is very varied, as it involves monthly payroll accounting, which is pretty much the same every month. However, there are so many additional facets to the job, such as payroll tax and social security assessments, contact with health insurance companies, tax offices and clients, evaluations and much more.
Daniela: I really enjoy working in a team and with clients, as well as the recurring challenges and constantly learning new things.

How do you see your professional future in the next few years?

Michael: For me, the next few years will be about getting more routine, gaining experience and constantly expanding my professional knowledge.
Daniela: First of all, I want to give myself time to really settle into the job and gain practical experience. Then I see myself attending further training courses to deepen my knowledge.

How would you describe Rödl & Partner in 3 words?

Michael: competent, versatile, international

Rödl & Partner is offering a similar training program in financial accounting in autumn 2024. What advice would you like to give our applicants for Fit4FiBu?

Michael: I think the most important thing is that you should not worry too much. The knowledge will come. You should not hold back with the questions either.
Daniela: A career changer in this way is a great opportunity to enter a professional field without any previous knowledge. I myself was and am enthusiastic about this opportunity and wish all participants to believe in themselves, even when things get difficult – it’s worth it. Good luck and have fun!
